File naming for Excel workbooks of the original road survey information.

    Generic

    Example

    HartlandVT_V04P001S1.xls

    Explanation

HartlandVT_ identify the town and state
Vvv V04 volume 4 - This field is exactly 2 digits wide. Left-fill the volume number with zeros so that names line up in sequence
Pppp P001 page 1 - This field is exactly 3 digits wide. Left-fill the page number with zeros so that file names in a file browser line up in sequence
Ss S1 survey 1 - This field is exactly 1 digit wide. On some pages of the Town record book, there is more than one survey or part thereof. The surveys are numbered starting with 1, which is assigned to the first survey which BEGINS on that page. If a page begins with a survey continued from the previous page, then the following survey (which begins on this page) is numbered 1.

IMPORTANT NOTE: There are instances of entries in the Town records that have no relevence to the creation, alteration, or discontinuance of Town highways. Included are the establishment of school districts, found livestock, vetting new teachers, fence division, taxation, and others. Entries of this sort must be skipped over (not counted) when assigning S-numbers on the page.
